At least two officers killed in Kandahar attack

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) -- A governor's spokesman says two police officers were killed and dozens of other people were hurt in today's suicide bomb attack at the police headquarters in Kandahar -- the second-biggest city in Afghanistan. But a high-ranking officer says six police were killed.

Police say a border police commander was the target of the attack. He reportedly was injured.

One witness says the commander's guards kept the bombers from getting close to him.

Officials say the blasts went off within a minute of each other -- one on a ground floor, and one on an upper floor.

Kandahar is the former stronghold of the Taliban. In June, militants carried out a huge attack on the city's prison, freeing almost 900 prisoners.
