Ohioan is youngest to do solo row across Atlantic

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (AP) -- A 22-year-old American woman has completed a solo row across the Atlantic Ocean.

Katie Spotz reached land Sunday in Guyana, nearly 3,000 miles from Dakar where she launched her 19-foot row boat on Jan. 3.

The endurance athlete from Mentor, Ohio, is claiming a world record as the youngest rower to cross an ocean solo. Kenneth Crutchlow of the Ocean Rowing Society says she appears to have broken the record set by a 23-year-old British man in 2005.

Spotz rowed to raise money for clean drinking water for the estimated 1 billion people worldwide who lack it.

Her team says she did not have any support boat aside from a Coast Guard vessel that escorted her to the South American coast.
